Abstract

New data on the distribution, biotopical confinedness, age and gender composition of mouse-like rodents and insectivores in natural and transformed territories of the White Sea-Kuloi plateau in the European North of Russia are summarized and analyzed. The fauna of small mammals of the research areas includes 9 species; red-backed vole Myodes rutilus (share in account is 45 %), bank vole Myodes glareolus (24 %), common shrew Sorex araneus (8 %) and wood lemming Myopys schisticolor (8 %) dominate by the abundance. The analysis of the composition of small mammals population in habitats with different degrees of transformation of the environment demonstrates that the species dominating by the abundance in the natural and slightly disturbed territories keep the leading positions also on the highly transformed areas, but their share in the total population decreases from 100 to 70 %. The share of common shrew Sorex araneus, tundra vole Alexandromys oeconomus and grey red-backed vole Craseomys rufocanus increases in the highly transformed territories due to the selectivity of these species to the habitat. So, the habitats without forest stand, with high humidity and dense herb stratum attract common shrew; waterlogged relief depressions attract tundra vole; stony placers bounding with vegetation attract grey red-backed vole. Basic reproductive livestock population of red-backed vole and bank vole consisting of hibernate animal units is located in natural and little disturbed habitats. The population of these voles in the highly transformed habitats is represented only by underyearlings.
